There’s one distinctive elemement that separates the professionals from the online business wannabe’s:
A signature package or service.
I touched on this briefly last week but I thought it was important enough to warrant its own post!
Offering all kinds of services to all kinds of people just makes people confused.
And when people are confused, they’re not going to buy a single thing from you.
In the online business world, it’s really difficult to find success as a Jack of All Trades.
There are VAs who specialize in social media and VAs who’ll set up and maintain your WordPress site. There are graphic designers who create social media templates and graphic designers who’ll do all of your branding elements. There are business coaches who help small business get off the ground and coaches that help larger businesses level even further up.
For each industry professional, you know exactly what they can and can’t do for you and how much it costs.
But I know. When you’re just starting out, you’re probably a little reluctant to do this. You’d rather keep the doors open and see what floats your way.
Well tell me honestly: how is that working for you?
I’m only asking because I was once like you and let me tell you: it sure wasn’t working for me!
Being vague or overly general is the kiss of death in the online world.
(And the answer to that is not everything!)
It’s up to you to decide on what that is in advance and package it so those people can find you.
Creating your signature service or package doesn’t have to be difficult! It just takes a little planning in advance. And besides, the more clear you are about who you are and what you offer, the better off you (and your business!) will ultimately be.
How To Create Your Signature Service or Package
1. Pick Your Focus
If you’re a multi-passionate entrepreneur then this is the moment you’ve been dreading. It’s time to take a deep breath and pick something!
The truth is if you want people to hire you, you have to get really specific about what you can offer and how it will benefit your customer.
If you can become well-known for one thing, you’re golden!
If the idea skeeves you out, remember you can always take on other projects on the side! You can even change your focus down the road. But it’s still crucial that you pick that one thing right now to focus on.
So think about what you enjoy the most and what your clients enjoy receiving from you the most. The perfect balance is something that lights you up and gets enough interest to pay your bills.
One added bonus is that once you figure out what your signature service is, all your other offerings can become tailor-made to support it. This looks so much more professional compared to having a random bunch of offerings that may or may not have anything to do with each other!
2. Know What You’re Really Offering
Successful (and lucrative!) signature packages or services are a result of being really focused on your why.
What you offer is only one part of this equation.
No one is just a graphic designer or a writer. There are your services and then there’s the real problem you’re addressing.
You see, people don’t buy based on logic. They buy based on emotion. Your customer needs to see what you’re offering and think “Holy fuck yes! That’s just what I need.”
And the truth is, no one will fee like that if you’re just talking about your writing or coaching services.
There’s another journey that you need to highlight:
Maybe you’re a nutritionist who helps busy moms save time on food prep.
Maybe you’re a coach who helps millennials transition from college to their first job.
Maybe you’re a writer who can make even the most boring sales page sound ridiculously awesome. (And therefore attract an amazing army of clients!)
It’s up to you to get clear about exactly what that thing is and then put it out there so your future customers can find you!
4. Know Your Why
There’s only one more thing we need to nail down before we can go any further.
Exactly why are you creating this product or service?
The answer, of course, is to help someone. Um yeah duh! But why are YOU doing it? What brought you here? What made you choose to do this right now? (Other than me telling you to pick something!)
Every single entrepreneur is a magical combination of experience, interest, skills and timing. It might not seem all that interesting to you but your story is actually your secret sauce! People are going to choose you because of your approach and your vibe. In order for them to see that, you’ve got to share your story.
So take some time to think about it. What crazy (or not!) experiences brought you here today? Then take it a step further: how can you tell that story through your copy and branding? Putting yourself out there takes guts but you’ll reap the financial rewards in the end.
5. Decide What’s Included
After you really understand what you’re offering and why, it’s time to create a package that gets the job done.
This part doesn’t have to be overwhelming! If you’re like me, the initial temptation is to throw in everything you can plus your first born. But there’s a much easier way to design your package that doesn’t involve blood or tears.
The real trick is to look at it from your clients perspective! Your only job is to take your client from A (beginning) to B (results!). So exactly what do you need to include in order to do that?
Once you know what your end goal is, this part is really easy! Clarity is always your friend in small business so focus on getting the job done, not on all the extras or bonuses.
6. Automate It
Another cool thing about creating signature services or packages is that you can do a lot of work in advance. (Woah!) Gone are the days of writing up a proposal then sitting around and waiting (…and waiting) for a response. By the time you’ve landed a customer, both of you know exactly what you’re giving or getting and for how much. They’re already all in! So it’s time for you to do the same.
Your prices are set in stone. You know exactly what you’re delivering and when. All you need to do now is walk through your entire process to figure out a few details that can be sorted out in advance.
Automation is an awesome time-saving solution for many of your regular tasks! What can you do now to save time on later? Think contracts, invoices, scheduling appointment times or calls, payment reminders and requests for feedback. Yeah, it might be a pain to set-up at first, but the more tasks you can automate now, the less work you’ll have to put in later and more professional you’ll look! A total win/win.
I hope this post inspires you to get real about your offerings and hone in on your signature service or package. The online business world can be tough so the more clear you are about where you fit, the better off you’ll be!
If you found this inspiring, please remember to say thank you and share!
See you back here next week!
